Interactive Notebooks

So we rolled out interactive notebooks today. I’m curious to see how they go this year. I’m really excited about their potential. Some of the concerns I have are making them actually useful and not just an other meaningless hoop that students have to jump through. I think these have the advantage in that students can make of them what they will.

I don’t really understand why, in traditional interactive notebooks, student reaction goes on the left hand side instead of the right. Maybe that’s to put the emphasis on the student reaction. Our eyes are trained to read left to right, so we’re uncomfortable with negative space on the left side of the page. By having the initial note taking happen on the right side, maybe a sense of incompleteness is conveyed, encouraging students to fill in the left side? Just weird thoughts. Regardless, we went the other way, with student reaction taking place on the right side.
