We are the… music-makers?

Be still my beating heart, Microsoft has released their groundbreaking app Songsmith as a freebie for educators. In case you haven’t heard of Songsmith or aren’t familiar with the hundreds of hilarious videos and songs out there redone in Songsmith, let me catch you up.

It all started with this awesome little advertisement they released. I could never decide if it was a joke or some sort of ironic attempt at kitschy humor. Either way, it’s brilliant (assuming, of course, that it’s not supposed to be in earnest).

As if that wasn’t good enough, a meme developed of taking perfectly good song lyrics, tossing them into Songsmith, and letting hilarity ensue.

See the Clash get ruined through the wonders of Songsmith below:

So, ummm, yeah. Thanks Microsoft for releasing this wonderful tool to educators. We can now prove exactly how sout-of-touch and dorky we are to our students… in song. In all seriousness, though, I could see certain students latching onto this technology and enjoying it for the ability to create parodies and silliness.
