Storytelling as Basic Human Function

One of the things I love about listening to NPR is how often I find content that synchronizes with what we’re doing in my classes. This morning was no exception, as a feature titled “Our Storied Lives: The Quest for ‘Something More‘” came on the radio. We listened to this in my classes and had a pretty productive discussion on storytelling and how we envision our lives as stories. I tried to use this piece to further convince students of the relevance and importance of narrative. Highlights of the discussion included students talking about how our ideal narratives come from “the American dream” and not necessarily reality or personal experiences.

Then we went on to discuss how to craft authentic voice in narrative writing.
